The Limburg–Antwerp Express: Port of Limburg and Gosselin join forces on the Albert Canal
Genk, 3 March 2026 – Port of Limburg and logistics service provider Gosselin announce a strategic partnership for container transport between Limburg and the Port of Antwerp. By bundling their container volumes and operating jointly on the Albert Canal, both partners increase efficiency, shorten transit times, and strengthen Limburg’s connectivity with the main deep-sea terminals.
Port of Limburg, the container terminal located on the former Ford site in Genk, has been operational since March 2025 and has rapidly developed a network of frequent and reliable connections to the main seaports. Recently, a partnership was announced with Barge Terminal Born for fixed and frequent sailings to Rotterdam. With the new collaboration with Gosselin, the connection to Antwerp now also receives a significant boost.
Gosselin, headquartered in Deurne, currently operates three inland waterway terminals and one rail terminal in Flanders. As a logistics, asset-based, one-stop service provider, Gosselin has long focused on an integrated multimodal supply chain with its own in-house services. Partnerships such as the one with Port of Limburg confirm its ambition to promote inland waterway transport as a sustainable and future-oriented solution, using trucks primarily for the “last mile.”
More Efficient Sailing Through Bundled Volumes
Within the partnership, the container flows of Port of Limburg and Gosselin will be combined and centrally planned by Contargo Transbox. Based in Wijnegem, Contargo Transbox develops and implements advanced barge solutions for complex logistics routes within Belgium. Thanks to the integrated planning model, an optimal overview of volumes and deadlines is created, resulting in more efficient sailing schedules, fewer intermediate stops, and larger call sizes per terminal.
“It is crucial to collaborate with a partner that has a complete overview of all volumes and can plan them from one central position,” all parties state. “This enables us to achieve maximum efficiency and offer our customers even more reliable services.”
The larger volumes per call also enable more direct point-to-point connections. This not only shortens lead times but also increases operational efficiency at the Antwerp terminals themselves, which have long advocated for larger call sizes. In return, additional fixed handling windows have already been secured at several terminals in Antwerp.
A Logical Step After Years of Dialogue
Port of Limburg and Gosselin have been in discussions about potential cooperation for some time. These talks accelerated following the opening of an additional Belgian Gosselin site along the Albert Canal in Genk-South in the summer of 2025, located a short distance from Port of Limburg.
“A successful partnership starts with listening to each other, maintaining an open dialogue, and showing mutual respect for each other’s interests,” says Benjamin Hermans, CEO of Port of Limburg. “Combined with a strong entrepreneurial mindset, this leads to powerful partnerships like this one. We are extremely satisfied and convinced that this collaboration will create sustainable added value for all parties involved.”
